PRINTMAKING I

Take your first steps into the creative & exciting world of printmaking! You will learn the fundamentals of printmaking: monotype, linoleum cut, and mixing color. If you’re a painter you’ll find the use of color mixing in the printing process exciting too! Upon completing Printmaking I attendees will leave with a minimum of 10 prints and will have the foundational knowledge to take our intermediate Printmaking II.

This workshop is perfect for people who are curious about printmaking or refreshing their knowledge if they have previous experience. This small interactive workshop guarantees you plenty of time with the instructor. Join us!

SMALL EDITION PRINTMAKING

In this workshop you will learn printmaking techniques including linocuts and collagraphs to illustrate a poem (yours or one of your choosing.) These images will be either hand-printed or printed via an etching press. When the prints are completed they will be assembled into an innovative book structure called the Australian Reverse Piano Hinge binding. The workshop is open to all interested; printers, bookmakers, and those curious to experiment with text and images. You will come away with an edition of 4 books measuring approximately 6 x 4".

PRINTMAKING III
FOCUS ON COLOR

This 6 week workshop is geared for people who took Printmaking II with us or have previous printmaking experience and want to hone their personal interests. Experimentation with ink modifiers, mark making methods and color theory will be central to this workshop. Exercises in color mixing and layering will be worked into the projects. If you have work and sketches you are encouraged to bring them. This workshop is limited to 4 participants so you are guaranteed plenty of time with the instructor. All materials are provided.

MONOTYPE

$This intermediate monotype workshop will provide a space and structure for artists to explore and invest in expanding their creative practice. Expect to create a minimum of 10 prints as you challenge yourself through experimentation and working in a series. You will learn how to work with multiple plates and how to effectively register them. Experimentation will include areas of ink modifiers, composition, and color. Participants are encouraged to bring ideas and concepts that they are currently working on to develop and shift them through the media and techniques (not required).

Some previous experience in printmaking is essential for this class. If you are new to printmaking you are strongly encouraged to take Printmaking 1 class first.

Spend this fun weekend with us and leave more confident in your artistic journey. This workshop has a maximum of 4 people so there is ample time to work with the instructor.

MOKUHANGA PRINTMAKING

This workshop will focus on “bokashi” or gradations using water and pigment on the block. Bokashi allows for a variation in lightness and darkness by hand-applying a gradation of ink to a moistened wooden printing block, rather than uniformly inking the block.

Experimenting with the printing block, so you can develop an understanding of the varying conditions of the block. This workshop will broaden your sense of the possibilities of mokuhanga through experimentation.

Trained in Japan, Patty Hudak will guide participants in the
immersive techniques of carving and printing, using handmade brushes, Japanese paper, starch glue, sumi, and a handheld baren to carve and print an edition of sumi prints. We will cover the history and importance of sumi ink in Asia, and its potential as a medium for printmakers.
