CREATIVE BOOKMAKING
with Jane Ploughman and Susan Smereka Date to be determined $325 Welcome to the exciting world of bookmaking! This class is ideal for the newbie and for those with some experience. Learn the process of paste paper, Gelli plate printing, and Japanese marbling; Suminagashi. These decorative papers will be incorporated into book structures such as single sheet, a single flag, and an accordion with a hardcover. In your final book project, you will also work on the content (words, drawings, collage, etc) for your book. Jane Ploughman, bookmaker and printmaker from New Haven, Vermont, and I, Susan Smereka will co-teach this workshop. With two instructors you are guaranteed plenty of one-on-one instruction. Saturday, November 4 10 am to 2 pm Learn the fine art of Japanese marbling called Suminagashi. You will have plenty of time to practice and refine the art in this 4-hour workshop. It is a versatile decorative paper that can be used for your bookmaking projects, collaging, stationary, and/or handmade cards. A set amount of paper is allotted, there is more paper to purchase or you can bring your own. |
GELLI PLATE AND COLLAGE BOOKMAKING
with Jane Ploughman and Susan Smereka 3 weeks October 25 - November 8 2 - 5 pm $200 Create a unique artist's book while learning new bookmaking and printmaking techniques. This workshop will guide you through a three-part creative process to generate text and images using Gelli plate printmaking and collage. Your completed project will combine your edited and refined creations in a hardcover book (approximately 3.5 x 5”) with 8 spreads (30 sides) handbound with a long stitch variation. All supplies are provided. No experience needed - great for those trying to break out of a creative block, or searching for creative ways to generate image and text. PASTE PAPER
Sunday, November 5 10 am to 2 pm People have been making paste paper for centuries! This decorative paper making is fun and easy to do so you can learn the skill and do it at home. Or if you don't like the mess - come and get messy with us! You'll make lots of beautiful paper that you can use for your bookmaking projects, collaging, and/or handmade cards. A set amount of paper is part of the workshop fee, there is more paper to purchase or you can bring your own. |
SMALL EDITION BOOKMAKING
with Jane Ploughman and Susan Smereka 4 weeks - Wednesdays October 25 - November 15 9:30 - 12:30 pm $280 During this 4 week workshop, participants will create an artists' book in a small edition. Beginning with a haiku (yours or someone else's), you will learn print and image making techniques including linocuts and collographs to illustrate the poem. These images will be either hand-printed or printed via a press. When the prints are completed they will be assembled into an innovative book structure called the Australian Reverse Piano Hinge binding. The workshop is open to all interested; printers, bookmakers and those curious to experiment with text and image. All supplies are included. GELLI PLATE MAGAZINE TRANSFERS
Wednesday, November 15 1 to 4 pm This workshop will focus on magazine transfers using the Gelli plate. You will learn the process of transferring an image from a magazine onto paper with a Gelli plate and acrylic paint. Skills taught will include how to troubleshoot problems, how to keep working on artwork, and ways to encourage experimentation. You will create images that are great for collage, and other creative projects. Most of all you will have lots of fun! |
