The Silent Type

​This summer, The Silent Type brings together artists and designers whose work explores the intersection of visual design, natural systems, and human culture. Borrowing its title from both typography and character, the exhibition reflects on the idea of the “silent type”;  the subtle structures, patterns, and visual cues that communicate without speaking.
On view June 5 through August 27, the exhibition examines how forms, rhythms, and systems found in nature are translated into typography, sculpture, materials, and spatial interventions. Through layered forms of communication, including text, image, and three-dimensional design and moving between art and design, information and atmosphere, the exhibition considers how quiet forms of visual communication shape memory, behavior, and collective awareness.
Both playful and intentional, the works reveal the understated ways design mediates our relationship with the natural world and with one another. Featured artists include Tina Christensen, Leslie Fry, Michael Jager, Susan Smereka, and Elise Whittemore.
